AbstractThe United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied-Industrial and Service Workers International Union (USW) represents working and retired members throughout the United States and Canada in just about every sector of the North American economy. From metals and mining and manufacturing, to health care and various services in both the public and private sectors. Established as the Steel Workers Organizing Committee (SWOC) in 1936 to coordinate the massive drive to organize the North American steel industry, the organization grew to become the United Steelworkers on May 22, 1942. The Aluminum Workers of America joined the Steelworkers on June 30, 1944. The following unions have also merged into the USW: International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers (1967); United Stone and Allied Product Workers (1971); District 50, Allied and Technical Workers (1972); Upholsterers International Union of North America (1985); United Rubber, Cork, Linoleum & Plastic Workers (1995); Aluminum, Brick and Glass Workers Union (1996); Canadian Division of the Transportation Communications International Union (1999); American Flint Glass Workers Union (2003); Industrial, Wood and Allied Workers of Canada (2004); Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union (2005).
